She asks him to teach her Urdu and the Quran. When Victoria discovers he is married, she asks him to return to India and bring his wife to join him in England.

He arrives with his wife and his mother-in-law, both wearing black burqas , to the consternation of the household but the fascination of Victoria.

It is elaborately decorated with carvings by Bhai Ram Singh in an intricate style, with a carpet from Agra, formal portraits of renowned Indians, and a replica of the Peacock Throne.

While Victoria treats Abdul as a son, his preferment is resented by her household and inner circle, including her son Bertie and the prime minister.

The household plots to undermine their relationship, hoping that Abdul will be sent home. When Victoria embarrasses herself by recounting to the court the one-sided account of the Indian Rebellion of that Abdul had told her, Victoria's faith and trust in him are shaken and she decides he must go home.

But soon after, she changes her mind and asks him to stay. The prime minister is adamant that the royal household must find a way to get rid of Abdul.

They research his family background in India and present Victoria with a dossier to show that his family is more ordinary and poor than Abdul has told her.

When Victoria insists her doctor examine Abdul to find out why his wife has not become pregnant, he discovers that Abdul has gonorrhea and rushes to tell the queen, expecting her to dismiss him in disgust.

However, Victoria remains loyal to Abdul and admonishes her courtiers for plotting against him. She tells the household that she intends to give Abdul a knighthood.

Eventually, the household decides that if Victoria does not break with Abdul they will all resign. They also threaten to certify Victoria as insane.

When Victoria is told, she angrily summons the entire household to the Durbar Room and demands that anyone who wants to resign step forward.

When none do so, she tells them she has decided not to make Abdul a knight, but to include him in her next honours list as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

When Victoria falls ill, she urges Abdul to return to India, while she can still protect him. She warns him that when she dies, the court will turn on him, but Abdul insists that he will stay with Victoria until the end of her life.

In , Victoria dies, and her son Bertie, now Edward VII , rejects Abdul, burning all the gifts and papers he has received from the Queen, and sending him and his family back to India.

Abdul's wife manages to save the locket for him. It is revealed that Abdul lived in India until his death eight years later in The film ends with Abdul kneeling at a large statue of Queen Victoria close to the Taj Mahal , talking to it and kissing its feet in respect.

Stephen Frears was set to direct. Principal photography on the film began on 15 September , at Victoria's former royal residence Osborne House on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom.

Costumes from the production were on display at Osborne House, from 24 July until 30 September In the Women's Voices for Change , Alexandra MacAaron, who rated the movie eight out of ten, wrote that "Judi Dench's Oscar-worthy second turn as Queen Victoria is a poignant portrait of fading power and human connection.

Just don't mistake it for actual history. In the Daily Express , critic Andy Lea rated the film two out of five, describing Abdul's character as "disappointingly servile" and criticising the plot as "decent material for a knockabout farce," but praising Dench as "predictably brilliant.

But this does not equate to boredom. If you are someone who does not like period pieces, you won't like this one either.

If you prefer fast moving action, or like to see lots of physical demonstrations of affection, if you want blood in your movies, please leave this one alone instead of watching it and then giving a negative review.

Queen Victoria had been devastated at the loss of her husband, Prince Albert, in She then developed a close relationship with her personal servant, John Brown, but he too passed away in For the next thirteen years, everyone around the Queen attempted to sabotage their friendship, but she steadfastly refused to hear anything against him.

In the book, author Shrabani Basu had framed a very readable book, despite a dizzying number of unfamiliar terms, locations and players.

She also made a very convincing argument that, as Queen Victoria believed, the objections raised against Karim were entirely due to racism and class snobbery.

Karim are in fact due to these factors. Queen Victoria held the title of Empress of India and, as the reigning monarch of the Indian colony, was very much loved by the Indian people.

She insisted on having a large number of Indian servants in her household, much to the chagrin and disgust of her family and court. The various people in her life attempted to discredit the Munshie time and again, but were never able to substantiate any claims against him.

When Queen Victoria died, the Munshie and his family were expelled from England, along with all the other Indians in her court.

All personal correspondence from the Queen to her Munshie were seized and burned after her death and a paranoid persecution of Abdul and his family continued even beyond his death, eight years after his beloved queen.

Of course, the situation in India did not continue and British rule was abolished less than fifty years after the reign of Queen Victoria.

For over one hundred years the story of the Munshie and his Queen languished in obscurity, until the book Victoria and Abdul and then the film of the same title untangled a very complicated and hidden chapter in English and Indian history.

Quite a good movie, human interest story is what it was to me. Wondered how much was true and how much was added to the film; would he have written about that in his century-later-found journals, about the wife not becoming pregnant because aspect?

I don't think so. Also highly doubtful the queen would have been dropped off on an island with her teacher with absolutely no bodyguard or staff.

However, his intelligence and manner was not in question and was certainly what must have won the Queen's heart and trust.

As the telling of this written story, it was a good history film, presuming it was a mostly non-fictional rendering. In the end, there's a photo of the queen herself with a much heavier Abdul.

The actor who played him was very loveable and Judi Dench simply excellent in this film. In today's milieu, this film is bound to stir up a few things; Muslim's called Hindu's due to ignorance just because they're from India would be offensive to anyone who is from either of those religions.

For me, the full black burkas were just unbearable to see even if it was a century ago and the nose ring. But as a human interest story from a piece of actual history, and as a film, it was exceptionally well done.

The cinematography was excellent. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Translate all reviews to English.

Brilliantly acted and photographed but all in all a bit of a disappointment. For some strange reason they have gone for laughs on what was in reality a sad and tragic tale of a lonely old Victoria taking to a Moslem servant to the consternation of the Royal household as you would expect at the time sadly.

Still Dench was perfection itself and should garner some award nods. For myself I would have preferred a more serious telling.

There are 2 brief extras containing interviews that add little. Both leads are as good as one-another.

So much attention to detail. Faultless supporting cast, particularly enjoyed Eddie Izzard's role as the outraged Prince of Wales.

Victoria tried so hard towards the end of her life to protect her 'Munshi' knowing that, after her death, the Royal Household would send him packing back to India.

Historically not quite accurate, but artistic licence had to be applied. The lady was ahead of her time.

Essential viewing for anyone interested in Queen Victoria, but the film is too blatantly biased and also contains many historical inaccuracies.

Judi Dench's performance as QV is also a bit too ripe compared with the more restrained one in Mrs Brown, which is a much better film.

There is almost a slapstick air in the first half of the film. One person found this helpful. Load more international reviews.

This is an interesting film which in it's way shows us why we have some of the problems and misunderstandings even in today's diverse world.

The hypocrisy of the age is clearly portrayed and it only goes to show underneath the wrapper of grandeur people still want the same as those born into more humble positions - genuine companionship.

Well worth a watch. I wish I had seen this before I visited Osbourne House last year as it would of explained the Durban room which whilst breathtaking is a little bit of an eye opener.

Having seen this film I now understand what was behind it and its a rather beautiful gesture. Shame the rest of the household were not so welcoming but saw him as a threat to their own station.

This is a biopic, do not know if information is correct for history buffs, but an enjoyable movie. Funny and sad. Judi Dench and Ali Fazal have a great on screen partnership and are casted perfectly.

I was only able to view the beginning of this film as the reception became blurred. The DVD was also tried on other devices ,but would not work.

I am unable to return it as that window has closed. A very expensive mistake in not checking , and viewing it on arrival. I enjoyed this film.

You will not be able to download it. There is no clue as to how and where from it could be downloaded. I have been waiting in anticipation of this DVD and found time to watch it yesterday.
